FA approves Val’s day clash for Legon Cities, Oly

Approval has been given for the match between Legon Cities and Accra Great Olympics to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday at 7pm.

The clash is a 10th week fixture of the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League (GPL) and will be expected to give soccer fans a special Valentine’s Day treat.

A letter from the FA to the home team, Legon Cities, signed by Mr Mark Addo, Head of the Competitions Department and Vice President of the FA indicated the approval and requested the club to do the necessary arrangement with the National Sports Authority (NSA) to get the place ready.

“Your club is requested to liaise with the authorities of the National Sports Authority to ensure the floodlights are available to provide adequate visibility for the entire period of the match,” the letter which was copied to Olympics, Referees Committee and the Match Commissioners Association, said.

Legon Cities and Olympics are yet to play but appear to have created an emerging rivalry that could see both clubs prepare for the game like a major cup final.

Both sides have been engaged in media warfare since match day one as they taunt each other on social media, vowing to teach each other football lessons on the field of play.

It started after Legon Cities opening home fixture loss to Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium where they outdoored a brand new bus and introduced an entertainment package that saw Dancehall king, Shatta Wale perform at half time.

That worked as they recorded a huge crowd but lost the game 3-1.

Following that was a tweet by Great Olympics on the social media platform Twitter, suggesting that ‘Not all that glitter is gold.’

On the same platform, Legon Cities responded to what they felt was a media tirade directed at them, tweeting that ‘The gate proceeds today from our game (against Kotoko) can actually rebrand your (Olympics) team & buy you a new team bus. We will meet you soon.”

After Oly’s painful defeat in the hands of Eleven Wonders, Legon Cities twitted ‘When you draw and they lose – at least 1 point is much better than 0 point.

Ahead of Friday’s clash, the Legon Royals fired another shot, predicting ‘Fireworks at the Accra Sports Stadium this Friday! We will beat them and still dash them our gate proceeds to rebrand their team bus! Stay tuned for more.
