Accra Lions roar against Gold Stars

Accra Lions put up a spirited performance yesterday to beat visiting Bibiani Gold Stars 2-0 in their match day 26 Ghana Premier League match played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

A goal in each half from striker Yahaya Mohammed and Daniel Kwame Awuni was all the Lions needed to move to fourth on the league log.

It was a good bounce back from their 2-0 away defeat to Hearts of Lions on match day 25.

For the visitors, they eyed another upset following their shock 1-0 win over Hearts of Oak.

The Lions started well as David Oduro’s powerful drive on 19 minutes was spilled onto the path of Mohammed by goalkeeper Ernest Kusi to slot home the opener.

Awuni broke loose from the far right, but after rounding up Yahaya Adraman, he curled the ball over the bar after 35 minutes.

Coach Stephen Frimpong Manso took out midfielder, Emmanuel Appau, for Ronald Frimpong to stabilise their link-up play, but his inclusion did little to stop the Lions from roaring.

A minute before the break, the Lions could have been up by two goals, but Awuni’s lob over Kusi missed the target.

Two minutes after the break, Awuni atoned for his earlier miss when he was put through by Dominic Amponsah to slip the ball beyond onrushing Kusi for the second goal.

Six minutes later, Blessing Dankwah wasted another glorious opportunity with only Kusi at his mercy.

Coach Frimpong Manso brought on Prince Kwabena Owusu and Abednego Tetteh for Mawuli Wayo and Alex Aso to help salvage their game, but defender Ali Mohammed neutralised their threat.

Dankwah’s profligacy nearly hunted him again on 63 minutes, when he had only goalkeeper Kusi to beat; this resulted in Coach Tanko Ibrahim replacing him with Edmond Amakye in the 71st minute.

The Lions kept to their shape, and although they had a few more chances to increase the tally, Awuni, Baba Salifu Apiiga, and Frederick Asante failed to find the target.
