Kumasi Asante Kotoko staged an impressive second
half display to beat Berekum Chelsea 2-0 in their seventh week clash of the
ongoing Normalisation Committe special competition game played at the Baba Yara
Sports Stadium, yesterday.
Kotoko got the two goals after the visitors had
held them boot for boot in the first department of the game which ended on a
barren note although Kotoko enjoyed greater dominance and created several
chances they could have scored from.
Emmanuel Gyamfi opened the scoring in the 46th
minute with a long range shot after he ghosted away from his markers.
In the 69th minute, Obed Owusu was put through
but before he lined up to shoot, he was heckled by goalkeeper
Gideon Ahenkorah in an incident the referee adjudged to be a foul and
rightly pointed to the spot.
That attracted protests from the Chelsea players who have initially urged the referee to issue a card to the Kotoko player.
After consulting his assistant, he issued a yellow card to the Chelsea goalie to confirm the earlier decision that put Kotoko in an advantageous position.
Abdul Safui Fatawu buried beautifully with a perfectly taken ‘panenka’ kick to cushion the lead against any late rally from the visitors.
Chelsea fought back for a consolation goal but never really threaten the Kotoko back men.
