The President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), Mr Charles Osei Asibey, has indicated Ghana’s readiness to host the 45th edition of the World Armwrestling Championship (WAC) in Accra.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday in Accra, Mr Asibey said Ghana has made strides in the sport and boast of the organisational capacity to stage a world class championship in Ghana.
“GAF is ready to host the world. We want to put up an excellent show for the world come next year.
According to the GAF President, the federation was poised to host a memorable championship, making reference to the just-ended 12th Africa Armwrestling Championship.
Consequently, he disclosed that GAF has begun engagements with entities that pledged to support the World Armwrestling Championship next year.
“These are institutions that have shown commitment to our course. They pledged to support us; so it is only appropriate to officially inform them of the task at hand.”
Mr Asibey thanked the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) the Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC), the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), and other entities for believing in the vision of the GAF.
The GAF President, who also doubles as the President for the Armwrestling Federation of Africa, added that “all other businesses that needs platforms to push their products, the world championship on TV will be watched globally by over 10 million people, so come on board and partner with GAF to make this dream possible.”
He said the World Championship would bring enormous benefits to the country in all aspects of its sectors, hence boosting its hospitality and tourism industries.
Ghana is expected to welcome about 2,000 athletes and officials, adding that “this is a significant milestone for Ghana Armwrestling, especially as a relatively young Federation. We will be the first sporting discipline to host a World Championship in Ghana.
