Ghana badminton presents team for Commonwealth Games

The Ghana Badminton Association (BAG) has announced its squad for the upcoming 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The five-man team, made up of three men and two women, would compete in all five events of badminton at the Games.

They include Kelvin Evans Alphous (Captain), Ahmed Abdul Samad, Cindy Esi Etornam Tornyenyor, Prospera Nantuo, and Aaron Dromo Tamakloe.

The national badminton team, the Golden Shuttlers, who would be led by Coach Moses Adu are inspired to bring success back to Ghana in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.

Individually, all players would go into the competition with huge pedigree and expected to make a mark at the event.

Nantuo Prospera from the Upper East Region, has been holding her own on the doubles, and mixed doubles. At age 21, she is a national champion and would hope to make her mark at the event where she would be making her debut with the national team.

For Cindy Esi Torneynor, who hails from the Volta Region, there is a lot to prove after winning the national doubles in 2018 and had since represented Ghana in mixed team events at international competitions.

The captain of the team, Kelvin Evans Alphous, would aim for a Commonwealth medal after his mix and men doubles partnership with Ahmad Samad and Prospera Nantuo caught fire in its first full season since 2018.

Four years after playing together, the pair took home gold medals in international events. He is the reigning men and mix doubles national record title.

Speaking on the team’s chances at the competition, Head Coach Moses Adu, said: “I feel incredibly proud to lead these great talents to take on the rest of the world.”

He said they look forward to a great event and would do well to come home with medals as they were preparing feverishly to excel at the Games.

Ghana Badminton would be making their seventh appearance at the Commonwealth Games after their debut in 1998 Games held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
