Armwrestling, cycling bosses eye GOC Pres, Secretary-General positions

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has announced that nominations for its Elective Congress will be opened immediately after its Extraordinary Congress scheduled for February 19.

The Extraordinary Congress is expected to draw a comprehensive roadmap for the forthcoming Elective Congress tentatively fixed for March 15.

Positions to be contested for are the President and Vice President, the Secretary General and others.

Ahead of the opening of nominations, the Times Sports investigation has revealed a few federation bosses including the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) President are eying top positions in the GOC.

According to GAF sources, its president Mr Charles Osei Asibey will contest Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah in the presidential race.

In the Secretary General race, President of the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF), Mr Mohammed Sahnoon would also contest incumbent Richard Akpokavi.

Sahnoon who lost to Akpokavi four years ago by five votes in the last elections, has is ready to stage a huge comeback to win this year’s election.

Other positions to be contested for include the second and third Vice Presidents, Deputy Secretary General, Treasurer and Vice Treasurer.

The Vice Treasurer position has been vacant for a couple of years after Mr Theo Edzie was stripped off the position following the Australian Visa scandal.

There would also be the Executive Board Membership position which is usually occupied by about five persons, to be contested.

Mr Nunoo Mensah who would be seeking a second term in office indicated that, the congress would follow strict COVID-19 protocols and would therefore not admit more than 25 persons.

In view of that, he said, members who would not be admitted among the 25 would be connected virtually to ensure they have a fair participation.

“For the main Elective Congress, we would seek advice from the Electoral Commission to ensure a very free, fair and transparent process,” he stated.

Ahead of the elections, he advised sportsmen and women as well as federation heads to adhere to safety protocols while training in a good atmosphere to remain competitive.
