We’re not devt agents -MP asserts

Andy Appiah-Kubi, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akyem North in the Ashanti Region, has stated that the perception that lawmakers are development agents is not entirely true.

He noted that the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) were responsible for the progress, growth and development at the local level and MPs must desist from creating the perception that they were development agents in the minds of their constituents.

According to Mr Appiah-Kubi, it was not only the public that thinks MPs were development agents but their own conduct fed into that, which was not entirely true however, in high profile elections, the faces of MPs were exposed but MMDCEs who were responsible for development at the local level were not elected.

“In high profile elections, it is the face of the MP that is out there, the MMDCEs, who are responsible for progress, growth and development at the local level are not elected, and so people see the MPs as the faces of their areas.

“We should learn useful lessons from our own conduct. We need the National Commission for Civic Education as a House to help us educate and sensitise the populace out there that Members of Parliament are not really growth and development agents,” Mr Appiah-Kubi cautioned.

He said it also depended to a large extent on how MPs conducted themselves in their activities and several MPs lost their seats during the 2020 elections with their constituents accusing them of poor performance in road construction and provision of facilities such as water, sanitation, health, education and other areas. –pulse.com.gh
