The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie popularly known as Sir John as “a cooling balm to the country’s frequently overheated political atmosphere who will be sorely missed by all Ghanaians.”
It said the party was in shock and disbelief over the passing of the former Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission.
A statement signed and issued by Kakra Essamuah, Director of Communications of NDC, in Accra on Thursday, said Mr Afriyie, who also formerly served as the General Secretary of the NPP, was a politician who rose above the pettiness and associated with political differences to drive national discourse with his wit, eloquence and friendly disposition.
It said “Sir John was a politician who, despite our political differences with him, could rise above the pettiness and drive the national discourse with his wit, eloquence and friendly disposition.
“He was a cooling balm to the country’s frequently overheated political atmosphere and he would be sorely missed by his family, the New Patriotic Party, and the country as a whole.
“We in the NDC console the family who are already mourning the untimely death of his mother and sister, his political party and the several admirers for whom he gave his all. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” the statement added.
Mr Afriyie passed on at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness on Wednesday evening.
He reportedly succumbed to coronavirus while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
