The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Anthony Forson, has stated that it is time to have a review of the 1992 Constitution instead of scrapping it for another Constitution.
He noted that a total overhaul was not the way to go but be meticulous so as to go through a referendum or an amendment procedures through Parliament.
“As we go along, if we find that provisions are not working to the good of the country, definitely, we will go through the referendum or amendment procedures through Parliament and not scrap it for another which will be cost-effective,” Mr Forson cautioned.
His comments come on the back of recent agitations by some Ghanaians asking for a total overhaul of the document which the campaign is being led by members of the #FixTheCountry who claim the 1992 Constitution has outlived its purpose.
Mr Forson indicated that some of the provisions would have to be amended because they did not sit with current socioeconomic trends but however, disagreed with scrapping the document which had some positives for the country.
“But I think that some provisions will have to be amended because they do not sit with current terms however, I disagree that they should be scrapped altogether because I believe it has worked quite well for us as a country and I also disagrees with the school of thought the Constitution was designed to suit one person.
“It was enacted to suit one person as it was believed at the time so our history as a country played a significant role in some of the provisions put into the Constitution and I do not think the Constitution could have been done in a vacuum but is meant to hold the country together, and it has done just that,” Mr Forson stressed. –myjoyonline.com
