Dr Obed Asamoah, a former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the level of development witnessed in some part of the Oti Region which were carved out of the Volta Region.
“Take for example the COCOBOD, the main office of the Volta Region was based in Hohoe but Hohoe has no cocoa, the cocoa is in Jasikan area so that kind of development was unfair.
“If the Cocoa Marketing Board wanted to establish an office in the area, it should have been in the cocoa growing area, not a place which did not produce any cocoa and that kind of lopsided development was something I was never happy about it,” Dr Asamoah bemoaned.
He called on the government to be “more honest” following numerous complaints by the citizenry of economic challenges and in order for the government to get the support and assistance of citizens, it must be prepared to be utterly transparent in all its financial dealings.
According to him, the country’s economic numbers had not been at their best in recent times because the cedi was depreciating in relation to dominant currencies at a fast pace with hike in fuel prices, adding that the country’s economy was on the verge of collapse without proper interventions not implemented as soon as possible.
Dr Asamoah stressed on the need for the government to be accountable and transparent with Ghanaians since there were issues about corruption, procurement and amounts of money being lost and has to come out clean.
Touching on former President John Mahama’s running mate in Election 2020, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, was unable to make an impact in the Central Region, he pointed out that she lost a seat in her home region but was unable to name the constituency.
He cautioned that it could pose danger for the party in the 2024 general election should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) select Alan Kyerematen, the Minister of Trade, to run on the party’s ticket in the 2024 elections.
Dr Asamoah affirmed that Mr Kyerematen was factor to consider since he could win and “If he does, it poses a threat to NDC in the Central Region, his mother’s side is from the region and there has to be fresh thinking in the party including amends to make her succeed because she did not make an impact”.
He revealed that gains made by the NDC in previous election were all in the country’s capital and in Accra, it was the disagreement between the government and spare parts dealers which worked in favour of the NDC. –myjoyonline.com
