ECG installs mobile substation at Oyarifa to boost power supply

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has inaugurated a 20/26MVA mobile substation at Oyarifa, near Adenta in Accra, to minimise the erratic power supply experienced by residents of the area and surrounding communities.

Funded at a cost of GH¢18 million, the substation is expected to address the low voltage and other supply challenges experienced by customers.

Inaugurating the mobile substation on Wednesday, General Manager of Accra East, Bismark Otoo, said that ECG was committed to delivering on its mandate to provide reliable, safe and quality electricity supply to all consumers.

Recently, he said that customers at Oyarifa, Ayi Mensah and surrounding areas had been experiencing low voltages which affected both domestic and commercial activities, hence the commissioning of the mobile substation to improve on the supply voltage and also address some supply challenges in the communities.

According to Mr Otoo, the newly commissioned mobile substation would serve more than 15,000 customers in Oyarifa, Ayi Mensah, Abokobi, Teiman, Danfa and Gravel Pit.

Christian Dzikunu, Operations Manager of ECG Sub- Transmission Division noted that the mobile substation would relieve some load off the substation in Adenta, to bring an end to frequent power outages and low voltages within Oyarifa and neighbouring communities.

He explained that supply and demand on the existing Adenta substation was increasing which caused it to be overloaded, thereby resulting in low quality of supply and frequent interruptions in supply within the affected areas.

“This mobile substation will adequately respond to the growing demand of electricity in Oyarifa and will also serve as a backup for the Adenta station.

Demand at Oyarifa was high, hence mounting serious pressure on the Adenta substation. In order to relieve the Adenta mobile substation of the pressure from Oyarifa and its environs, we had to set up a new mobile substation here, thereby improving the voltage profile as well,” he added.

He further reiterated ECG’s commitment to providing its customers with quality, safe and reliable power supply to meet the needs of customers.
