EC to drag 100 before court for alleged involvement in multiple voter registration– Oduro Numapau
Nana Oduro
Numapau, the Tema Metropolitan Director of the Electoral Commission, has hinted
that the office is processing for court about 100 persons who allegedly engaged
in multiple voter registration.
“At least 100 of such cases are currently being
processed for court, when found guilty, the offenders could be fined, that is the
only solution for the challenge of suspected multiple registration,” he
noted.
Nana Numapau
disclosed this when he was briefing assembly members of the Tema Metropolitan
Assembly on the roadmap for the December 17, 2019, district assembly, unit committee
and referendum elections.
He explained
that it was only the court that could order the removal of names from the
register after the detection of multiple registrations and noted that “some
of the culprits did not intentionally engage in multiple registrations but
probably may have re-registered instead of reporting the missing of a card
forgetting that their information was already in the system”.
Nana Numapau advised the public against such
acts, rather visit the nearest office of the commission to report the loss of
their cards and follow the processes of replacement and indicated that over
8,000 and 5,000 were registered in the Tema metropolis and Tema West municipality
respectively, during the limited registration exercise.
“The just ended voters’ exhibition exercise
realised 22 per cent of registered voters participating in the exercise in the
Tema Metropolis and Tema West Municipality even after it was extended for a
week, there will be platform mounting by aspirants between December 1 and 14 to
interact with and answer questions from the electorate,” he said.
Touching on the district assembly elections,
Nana Numapau stressed that “nominations will be opened very soon while
filing of documents from aspirants will be opened on October 8 and 9, 2019,
while October 10 and11 will cater for unit committee aspirants, according to
the EC planned outline.
“I appeal to assembly members and
prospective ones to educate and sensitise residents on the need to participate
in the elections and I am reminding you, at least 40 per cent of registered
voters nationally must vote in the referendum before a decision can be taken on
the proposed election of metropolitan, municipal, district chief executives and
all assemblies will be dissolved on Monday, October,
2019,” Nana Numapau said. -3news.com
