An Educationist, Dr Linnaeus Tannor, has advised young teachers in the country to upgrade themselves to enable them remain relevant in the changing trend of the teaching profession.
He stated that some philosophies and principles taught in the colleges of education were no more relevant to current happenings in the teaching profession, hence the need for young teachers to upgrade themselves to enable them impact positively the future generations well.
He advised them to improve themselves by spending money in buying literature and consistently reading to increase their knowledge base and teaching skills, thereby empowering themselves and staying relevant in the teaching field.
Dr Tannor was speaking at the launch of the National Youth Day Celebration organised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in Koforidua on the theme: “Empowering the Young Teacher: The Future of the Teaching Profession”.
The launch, attended by mostly young teachers, was in accordance with plans to earmark 2023 as the year for GNAT to adopt the International Youth Day as part of it calendar as slated in a 5-year-development Plan adopted by the Association.
Dr Tannor indicated there was the need for today’s teachers to upgrade themselves as teaching and learning had become complex in a new technological era with new contexts of learning.
“Young teachers must therefore upgrade themselves and empower themselves to reform to these changes while adapting to technology to remain relevant,” he said.
He noted that the attitude and approach of young teachers were a reflection of the future of the teaching profession.
The Chairman of the National Youth Sub-committee of GNAT, Mr Prosper Techie, charged the young teachers to take advantage of all the opportunities in the teaching profession to improve on their education.
He noted that many past great leaders were people in their youthful age, mentioning Thomas Sankara, Ibrahim Toure, among others, and called on the young teachers to make an impact now instead of waiting for future opportunities.
The Eastern Regional Chairman of GNAT, Patrick Boison, said the launch offered an opportunity to celebrate and mainstream young people’s voices, actions and inactions, initiatives, as well as their meaningful universal and ethical engagements.
