Truck falls on Kwame Nkrumah Interchange overpass

A DAF truck carrying a 40-footer container loaded with goods heading towards Odorkor, a suburb of Accra, fell on its side on the overpass of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, in Accra, yesterday.

The accident occurred around 3:20pm, when the trailer with registration number AS 4258N, was on its way to deliver raw materials for making baby diapers, to a warehouse at Odorkor.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident.

Police personnel together with their counterparts from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the National Disaster Management Organisation, who arrived on the scene shortly, diverted traffic to ensure free movement.

The driver, Mr Samuel Duodu, told the Ghanaian Times, that in attempt to climb the flyover, he realised that the clutch became ineffective thus causing the vehicle to reverse during which period the container fell off.

According to him, three other trucks carrying same load had earlier driven through the overpass with no incident.

Police Chief Inspector Felix Tseh,  of the Nima Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU),  said in order to avoid such occurrences,  the police continuously advised drivers of heavy cargo truck  vehicles, not to use the overpass but rather use the underpass.

At the time of filing this report, the GNFS had arrived to tow the truck to pave way for free flow of traffic.
