Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Tony Aidoo, has bemoaned lack of transformative policies of political parties which had declined significantly and impoverishing the citizenry.
He noted that the self-retrospection and continuous learning that political parties had to undertake in order to come up with transformative policies had declined significantly and expressed misgivings over the contemporary practice of politics in the country.
“Our politics have become mainly propagandists because you are to win elections with policies, programmes andsocial interventions which are appealing to the people and not propaganda and without that, all your electioneering campaigns become merely propagandistic.
“Current political parties are now focused on winning the next elections right after the previous one has ended, which will only leave the country in a deplorable state since political parties are the main agents of progress, growth and development,” Dr Aidoo decried.
He raised concerns over elections becoming more or less mechanism for just circulation of elites which was detrimental to the national interest and to the progress, growth and development expectations of the general populace and warned that the repercussions were quite severe.
According to him, unfortunately, it had helped to create ruling class of politicians whose only concern was how to win power as soon as one election ends, the campaign for the next starts which had also led to Ghanaians accepting propaganda more than actual transformative policies.
“However, elections becoming more or less mechanism for just circulation of political elites is detrimental to the national interest, progress, growth and development expectations of our nation and the populace with dire consequences if citizens continue to accept propaganda more than actual transformative policies.
“This unquenchable taste for propaganda has made electorates vulnerable and the vulnerability is now being exploited by political parties who seek to capture power for their parochial interest and a country deserves the government it gets so we are vulnerable to propaganda, you cannot blame politicians for taking advantage and exploiting your vulnerabilities,” Dr Aidoo pointed out.
