Stakeholders in C/R plant 550,000 trees to green Ghana

Participants from educational institutions, traditional authorities, religious bodies and individuals in the Central Region on Friday took part in the Green Ghana project to plant 550,000 plants across the region.

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) for instance initiated a move to plant 50,000 economic trees as part of the initiative and they were led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dora Edu-Buandoh and the Registrar, Mr Jeff Teye Onyame.

About an hour later, they were joined by players of the senior national team, the Black Stars who also took part in the planting of some trees.

The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Justina Marigold Assan, a Deputy Director at the Forestry Commission-in-charge of Operations, Madam Lydia Opoku, and other officials of the Commission, joined some educational institutions in Cape Coast to whip up enthusiasm among students and workers.

In a briefing, the Vice Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong stated that, the Green Ghana project was a laudable initiative and expressed management’s determination to help nurture the trees.

He indicated that, the University would be liaising with inmates from the Ankaful Prisons to plant more trees.

The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Justina Marigold Assan expressed appreciation to all participants for taking part in the exercise.

The principal of the  Komenda College of Education also led his team and students to plant over 200 trees.

The Principal of Komenda College of Education,  Rev Dr Kwesi Wilson, explained that, the school would promote the sustainability of the project as a policy, adding that  students would be required to write their names on the plant and then nurture the trees.

 He further said that the college, as part of its environmental policy would continue the tree planting exercise through to the month of July.
