Premature for NPP to be obsessed of winning Election 2024 – Abu Jinapor

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Damongo in the Savannah Region, Abu Jinapor, has cautioned that it is premature for the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be obsessed with thoughts of winning the 2024 elections.

“Members, supporters and the leadership of the party must work towards better governance and rule of law by executing their mandate including policies, programmes and social interventions,” he stated.

Mr Jinapor observed that calls for the election of a flagbearer two years before the main election was needless because in making the determination of whether to elect a presidential candidate two years when the party is in power, all major factors must be taken into consideration.

Over 6,000 delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were at the weekend locked in a national conference in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to consider 38 proposed amendments to the party’s constitution while considering a number of issues aimed at helping the NPP to win the 2024 elections.

This year’s conference was on the theme: ‘Our Resolve, Our Determination, and Commitment to Ghana’s Development’, and key proposal up for consideration was electing presidential candidate two years before national elections was shelved and the Council of Elders of the party tasked to deliberate on issue.

Article 10(2) sub-section one of the NPP constitution makes provisions for holding annual delegates’ conference which shall be the supreme decision-making body for the party.

According to Mr Jinapor, who is the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, electing presidential candidate two years before conduct of general elections would be problematic due to being government in power could win next election but electing candidate two years to elections and stays there does not work like that.

“The most important consideration has to be factored into when we elect our presidential candidate. We must be mindful we are in government, not in opposition, you win or lose elections when you are in government based on how you govern and not when you elect your candidate.

“Based on how we govern the citizenry will perceive our governance whether they are satisfied with governance or not however, any action will create impression the party is concerned about winning elections than governing,” Mr Jinapor contended. –myjoyonline.com
