Night Club Manager arrested for attacking police

The manager of a night club, who attacked a team of police during enforcement of COVID-19 safety protocol, has been arrested by the police at Osu, in Accra.

Heliwan Bilal of Lounge Night club, who is in the custody of the police was reported to have torn the uniform of a policeman and damaged the boots of two others.

The Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Effia Tenge, disclosed these to the Ghanaian Times, in Accra yesterday.

She said on January 3, 2021, at about 3:30am, police patrol team dispatched to enforce COVID-19 protocol went to Shisha Lounge night club at Osu and found the facility functioning.

DSP Tenge said when the manager, Heliwan Bilal, was confronted by the police, he rained insults on the police and in an attempt to arrest him, a crowd rushed on the police and attempted to disarm the team leader, but they were repelled.

She said the suspect was arrested after he tore the uniform of a policeman, and the boot of another policeman was damaged.

It would be recalled that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his 22nd broadcast to the nation on Ghana’s enhanced response to COVID-19 pandemic, instructed the Inspector General of Police to direct personnel of the Ghana Police Service to ensure the enforcement of the law on mask wearing at all public places and in public transport.

“They are also to ensure the closure of all-night clubs, pubs, cinemas and beaches that may be operating in defiance of law, they will be assisted by other security agencies if the need be,” he added.
