A devastating fire on Tuesday night swept through a three-bedroom house located at Tetegu in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality, in the Greater Accra Region.
All occupants, including five children escaped unhurt, and the family, who are currently left with nothing estimate their losses to be in excess of a million cedis.
Cause of the fire is not yet known, however, during a visit by the Ghanaian Times to the family yesterday, Mrs Patience Kofigah
owner of the house, lamented that it took the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) close to an hour after the emergency call was made to them, to arrive at the scene.
“The GNFS personnel were unable to effectively combat the fire. After finally arriving,it took them more than 30 minutes to prepare the fire tender for operations by whichat the time the house was already engulfed in flames,” she said.
Mrs Kofigah, who was overcome with emotion as she surveyed the ruins of the burnt house, said: “We were desperately
hoping to salvage some of our property, but that did not happen. We do not even know where to start from, my husband and I watched our toil burn to ashes.”
She revealed that her eldest child alerted her about smoke that was emanating from the children’s bedroom, but she and her husband were unable to salvage the situation, so they rather focused on bringing the children to safety.
Mrs Kofigah said that the smoke suddenly turned into an inferno leading to the complete destruction of their once beautiful room.
She appealed to individuals and organisations to the family, adding “we could not pick anything, we thank God we are alive but just imagining starting all over again is very scary
