‘MPs fixated with constituents’ enrolment onto NHIS’

Lawrence Adu Dapaah, a former Assembly member for Afo-Nkwanta Electoral Area in the Subin Constituency of the Ashanti Region, has raised concern over members of Parliament (MPs) fixation with enrolment of their constituents onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

“It is a problem and challenge if you have people who take delight in calling themselves MPs and the only service they can offer their constituents is to enrol them onto the NHIS, instead of lobbying for projects to transform their constituencies,” he lamented.

He alleged that “if assembly members can single-handedly lobby for projects worth thousands of Ghana Cedis to improve livelihood, then it behooves on MPs, who were resourced not to be fixated with enrolling their constituents on the NHIS, which is unfortunate”.

According to Mr. Dapaah, he single-handedly lobbied for projects for his residents and as MPs if all they can do is to enrol their constituents onto the NHIS, it was unfortunate and below the standard of MPs who were lawmakers.

He bemoaned the number of MPs enrolling their electorate onto the NHIS when they should be out there lobbying for life-changing projects for the region towards progress, growth and development.

Mr Dapaah said that MPs who spent their share of the District Assemblies Common Fund to enrol constituents onto the NHIS, did not deserve a second term in Parliament and a lazy approach on the part of such MPs and asked them to take another look at transforming livelihoods and attract investment.

He insisted that using the common fund for such purposes was a lazy approach to the progress and development of the people and not to take their electorate for granted and chided such MPs to be development-oriented saying “if this is the way to go then a handful of MPs do not deserve to be back in Parliament in 2025”. –classfmonline.com
