Businessman remanded over alleged illegal sale of vehicle

The Accra Circuit Court has granted GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties to a 40-year-old businessman, who allegedly forged documents covering a vehicle belonging to another businessman, and sold it.

Mr Yanick Dela-Dem, accused, was said to have forged documents covering a Mercedes Benz GL utility vehicle, sold it and transferred ownership to a buyer.

The court presided over by Mrs Evelyn Asamoah, adjourned the case to May 16, 2023.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Benson Benneh said that the complainant, William Hwanompe, is a businessman, who resided at Manjor.

The court heard that Hwanompe wanted to sell his Mercedes Benz GL vehicle for GH¢100,000.

Chief Insp Benneh said Dela-Dem took custody of Hwanompe’s vehicle under the pretext of showing it to a potential buyer, but did not return it.

The prosecution said Dela-Dem advertised the sale of vehicle on “Jiji.com,” an online marketing platform, and Joseph Kwame Okyere, a witness, saw the advertisement and expressed interest in buying the vehicle.

Chief Insp Benneh said Okyere met Dela-Dem, inspected and purchased the vehicle at the cost of GH¢65,000.

The court heard that Dela-Dem failed to inform Hwanompe about the sale of the vehicle, and he (accused) retrieved documents covering the vehicle from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority and transferred ownership of the vehicle to Okyere.

Chief Insp Benneh said Dela-Dem went into hiding after selling the vehicle, and when the case was reported to the police, the buyer was arrested and the vehicle retrieved.

The prosecution said that when Dela-Dem was grabbed, he admitted to the offence in his cautioned statement and refunded GH¢30,000. —GNA
