Brogya Genfi threatens to go to court if…

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Brogya Genfi has asked the government to immediately publish the Justice Emile Short Commission report on the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in the Greater Accra Region.

This is because the president has only 10 days left to exhaust the constitutionally mandated space for the publication.

Mr Genfi noted that the governments’ failure to make the findings of the report public in the last five months was blatant disregard for principles of transparency, probity and accountability and has threatened to go to court should the government fail to publish report within 10 days.

“It is exactly eight months since brutalities on innocent voters during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election occurred which was on January 31, 2019 when innocent citizens including the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Dzata George and other national officers of NDC were attacked at various polling centres, causing pandemonium.

“The events of that day prompted Ofosu Ampofo, the National Chairman of the NDC to announce their withdrawal and boycott of the election which recorded the lowest voter turnout in parliamentary elections, 19 per cent, out of total registered voter population of 88,710, only 17,501 turned up to exercise their franchise.

“Subsequently, opposition political parties came together to form an Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty which pulled some citizens onto the streets of Accra to demonstrate against the government and presented a petition at the seat of government.

“The government set up the Justice Emile Short Commission of Enquiry in accordance with Article 278 of the constitution to investigate circumstances leading to the violence and recommend measures for future curtailment and nation witnessed startling revelations of infiltration into ranks of our National Security.

“We also heard testimonies of how police uniforms, equipment and armament were used without authorisation and knowledge of the Inspector General of Police and his subordinates or the Minister for the Interior where people sustained injuries, some of them life-threatening and hospitalised for months.

“Our president has exactly 10 days left to exhaust the constitutionally mandated space to publish report,” Mr Genfi intimated. –myjoyonline.com
