People’s Party [CPP] has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to be free, fair,
transparent and credible in their dealings by having the ordinary Ghanaian
voter as their focal point and not any political party.
It said making political parties the focal point
of elections would be detrimental to the ordinary Ghanaian voter and the
commission needed to be guided by conscience to allay the fears of the
citizenry.
Making reference to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s statement on EC’s new voter register decision, the CPP noted that the president was wrong to back calls by a section of the citizenry to allow the Commission compile a new voters’ register.
“We are getting ourselves ready for December 7, the Electoral Commission is going to compile a new register, it appears there is now an eight-year cycle for the EC to compile a register, they did so in 2004 and 2012, with these last three including this one are all in the eight-year cycle, I think it makes a lot of sense and the national census itself is done on a ten-year basis.
“It makes sense that we keep up the EC to admit new people, take out all those who have died, their intention is to begin in April, we want everybody in Ghana who can vote to register, it’s important that we all exercise our civic duty to go and vote in December and choose the government that we want,” the President stated.
However, Benjamin Nsiah, Communications Director of the CPP, espousing the issue
mentioned that after reading IMANI Africa’s report on the new voters’ register controversy, he realised that the EC had erred in some of its processes and procedures for its decision.
“EC should realise that it does not have all the wisdom in the world, the most important thing for the EC to do in solving the controversy surrounding the new voters’ register is to break even by listening to all parties involved as it finds appropriate measures to ensure peace, unity and stability.
“The decision of the electoral commission not to listen to any diverse views can bring chaos to the 2020 general election and must be guided by conscience to ensure peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible elections,” Mr Nsiah admonished. -peacefmonline.com
