The senior national women’s football team, the Black Queens, yesterday arrived to a thunderous welcome at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) after securing the qualification ticket for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Pretoria, South Africa.
The Nora Hauptle-led Black Queens made sure of a return to Africa’s most prestigious women’s competition on Tuesday, despite a 1-0 loss in the second leg away to the Brave Gladiators of Nambia.
The tie ended 3-2 on aggregate, following a 3-1 first leg victory last Friday in Accra.
They were welcomed by a delegation comprising the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA)
The Women’s Representative on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council, Madam Gifty Oware-Mensah, led the delegation to South Africa for the second leg.
The team emerged from the arrival hall to a rapturous applause by the fans from the supporters groups that thronged the KIA and plunged the Airport into fanfare.
The team was welcomed by the GFA President, Kurt Okraku, his vice, Mark Addo, and some Executive Council members as well as some members of the football fraternity.
An elated Madam Oware-Mensah expressed excitement at the reception given the team, noting that the team felt appreciated for the success chalked for the nation.
“It’s been five years since we last made it to the WAFCON. We are back to the tournament with style. However, it is time to work even harder going into the tournament.”
