13th African Games: Stanbic Bank gives to LOC

Stanbic Bank Ghana has donated a cheque for GH₵200, 000 to the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the ongoing 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana.

The donation was to complement government’s efforts in organising the successful Games.

Presenting the cheque to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Mustapha Ussif, and members of the LOC, the Chief Executive Officer of the Bank, Mr Kwamina Asomaning, said they were happy to join the LOC to put Ghana on the map through the Games.

Sports, he said, aligns with their purpose as an organization, especially in the area of socio-economic development.

“Ghana is looking forward to promote sports on the continent and that is worth supporting. We are aware that government would need some support to be successful with the Games, hence the need to augment what government and stakeholders have invested in the Games,” he said.

The Bank, he said, had over the years invested in various sporting disciplines including swimming, tennis, and volleyball, and needed to diversify.

“We are grateful for the opportunity and look forward to ensuring that Ghana restores its dominance in sports,” he outlined.

Receiving, Mr Ussif thanked the Bank for the kind gesture which he said came at the right time.

He said the support came at the time they were about to pay per diems to the Ghanaian athletes, adding that, it would go a long way to assist.

“We have over 500 athletes from Team Ghana to be taken care of as we look forward to win more medals at the competition,” he stated.

He explicitly called on other corporate bodies to come on board to support the Africa Games as “government cannot do it alone and would count on the corporate sector for support.”

“There are over 3,000 guests and officials as well as volunteers on board. It’s a huge responsibility to government and would count on corporate Ghana,” he added.

According to the Executive Chairperson of the LOC, Dr Kweku Ofosu Asare, the country had incurred a lot of expenditure and grateful to Stanbic for the assistance.
