Two in court for illegally possessing gun

Two persons were on Monday granted bail for possessing a gun without lawful authority and disturbing public peace, by Tarkwa Circuit Court.

Paul Agbavor, a barber, pleaded guilty to disturbing public peace and not guilty to possessing a gun, while Godwin Fiagbenu Cobbinah, a security guard, pleaded not guilty to disturbing public peace.

They were both admitted to GH₵5,000 bail, with one surety each, and the case was adjourned to Thursday January 31.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman told the court that the complainant is the Unit Committee Chairman of Akyempim electoral area while the accused resides at Bankyim, both suburbs of Tarkwa.

She said on May 21, last year, Cobbinah detected that his two mobile phones had been stolen from his room and he suspected Agbavor of stealing the phone.

Chief Insp Anaman said the following day at about 7am, Cobbinah confronted Agbavor at Bankyim and demanded the mobile phones, which resulted into a fight, but they were separated.

Cobbinah later went to Agbavor’s residence in his absence in search of the mobile phones, while scouting he found a revolver in a bag, which he took custody of.

Chief Insp Anaman told the court that Agbavor asked Cobbinah to return the mobile phones before he would release the gun, and Agbavor attempted to take the gun.

The court heard that a misunderstanding ensued between the two, and the gun fell and Emmanuel Asante, a witness in the case, took the weapon and handed it over to the complainant, Inspector Anaman said.

The complainant apprehended the accused and handed them over to the police together with the gun.

At the charge office, the prosecutor said, Agbavor claimed ownership of the gun.

Prosecution said Agbavor in his caution statement, stated that the gun was given to him by Amponsah for sale.

Chief Insp Anaman led the police to Charlekrom, a suburb of Tarkwa, but could not locate the house of  Amponsah, and  efforts are being made to nab Amponsah. – GNA
