The University for Development Studies (UDS) has introduced new courses with the view of helping address unemployment in the country.
The new courses are part of steps the UDS is taking to help empower the graduates to become entrepreneurs.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Gabriel Ayum-Teye, who announced this named the news courses as undergraduate BSc. Economics, BSc in Banking and Finance.
He also mentioned that the university had introduced new postgraduate in Mphil/Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine, Clinical Microbiology.
The vice-chancellor stated this yesterday at the 22nd congregation ceremony in Tamale.
Prof. Ayum-Teye explained that the new courses were meant to help graduates to be self-employers
He emphasised that one of the solution to the unemployment in the country was to build the capacities and skills of graduates to be creative and innovative.
The Vice-Chancellor added that the programmes were tailored to address societal and industry needs of the country.
Prof. Ayum-Teye reaffirmed the University’s readiness to bring tertiary education to the door steps of the people as it is set to establish six more Distance Education Centres in the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Oti regions.
He argued that the establishment of such centres in the new regions would offer the qualified workers and other persons in those areas the opportunity to upgrade themselves.
The chairman of the Governing Council of the UDS, Prof WayoSeiniemphasised on the need for government to support the university to deliver on its mandate.
He said it was important for government to resource the university to undertake its activities without hindrance.
Prof Seini also appealed for help to complete all ongoing projects in the university to enable them offer more admission to qualified students.
He congratulated the graduants and advised them to be good ambassadors of the university.
A total of 7,293 students were awarded with various degrees in various fields.
This figure represents an increment of more than 60 per cent of last year’s figure.
