The Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU) has with immediate effect suspended its strike following what they say is “government goodwill” to address their concerns.
“There is time for everything and as government has shown goodwill and called us to the negotiation table, there is the need for the Union to reciprocate this and suspend the industrial action until further notice,” General Secretary of the HSWU, Franklin Owusu Ansah, said.
He was addressing journalists at a news conference on Saturday after an emergency council meeting was held by leadership of the Union last Friday on the matter.
The General Secretary, however, expressed the hope that every agreement reached with the government would be implemented to the latter.
“We decided to suspend the industrial action not because someone has intimidated or coerced us but because we have listened to the cry of the good people of Ghana.
We are on this note informing all our cherished members to return to work and discharge their duties accordingly with immediate effect,” he said.
Members of HSWU have for almost a week laid down their tools in protest of what they described as unfavorable working conditions.
According to them, the government had failed to review the conditions of service of its members as agreed upon in 2016.
The strike action led to scores of patients stranded at various public health facilties across the country as the workers pressed home their demands.
Membership of the HSWU numbering over 40,000 comprise lab technicians, store and record keepers, cleaners among others.
