Businessman grabbed for operating unlicensed insurance firm

The police have arrested a businessman, Gabriel Medawar, for allegedly operating an unlicensed insurance firm, at North Ridge, in Accra.

He was nabbed in a joint operation by the Airport Police and the National Insurance Commission (NIC), to clamp down on fake insurance firms.

The Commissioner of Insurance, Dr Justice Ofori, told journalists that, Mr Medawar, who was operating Harmonia Insurance Group, was arrested together with accomplices believed to be his employees.

He said preliminary investigations indicated that some unsuspecting members of the public had been patronising the services of the insurance group.

Dr Ofori stated that “the Police are currently investigating the matter with the view to bringing the perpetrators of these criminal acts to book, when found culpable.  The appropriate charges will be preferred against them and they would appear before court.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Manager, Legal, of NIC, Mr Oliver Bio, had cautioned the public, corporate bodies to desist from transacting business with unlicensed insurance groups.

Mr Bio cautioned that any company that would be caught dealing with Harmonia Insurance Group would be referred to the police.
