Bodies of 2 drowned policemen retrieved

Bodies of the two policemen who got drowned in river Oda at Kobro village, near Jacobu, in the Amansie Central District of Ashanti, have been retrieved.

A search party launched by residents from the villages along the banks of the river were said to have returned in the early morning of Friday with the bodies of the deceased tied to the canoe.

The two, lance corporals Stephen Kyeremeh and  Amedius Akwesi Boateng, both of Obuasi District Police Command, were still in their police uniforms when they were discovered, but their duty rifles were however not found.

Confirming to the Ghanaian Times here, yesterday, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Ashanti Regional Police Affairs Unit said the police were still searching for the rifles.

He said the bodies of the two had been deposited at the SDA Hospital’s mortuary.

Two other policemen, Sergeants Isaac Nyamekye and  James Ahiman, and their colleagues mentioned above were on patrol duty on the Obuasi-Dunkwa highway.

They received a distress call that some small-scale miners had been attacked by some suspected robbers armed with AK 47 assault rifles at Kobro.

The police team proceeded to Kobro, but to get to the robbery scene, they picked a canoe to cross the Oda river.

But, the robbers escaped upon seeing the police.

On their way back, the canoe on which all were on board, overturned.

The two sergeants managed to swim ashore, whilst the other two Lance Corporals together with their service rifles were carried away by the waters.
