Unemployed jailed 6 years for theft

The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 25-year-old unemployed to six years imprisonment for stealing items valued GH¢6,450 belonging to two persons.
Ebenezer Bortey admitted that he unlawfully entered Mr William Tawiah Bortier’s shop and Ms Mary Addo’s room, and caused damage to their roof and locks.
Ebenezer Bortey also admitted making away his (Bortier’s) goldsmith machine valued GH¢5,000 as well as Ms Addo’s electrical appliances and personal belongings valued GH¢1,450.
Ebenezer Bortey was convicted on his own plea and sentenced to six years imprisonment in hard labour.
Police Sergeant (Sgt) Priscilla Avorgah, who stood in for Police Chief Inspector John Gohoho, told the court that Ms Mary Addo was the complainant and a resident of Nungua Kpokeke whilst Ebenezer Bortey resided at Nungua.
The prosecution told the court presided over by Mr Isaac Oheneba Kuffuor that on July 24, 2023, at about 5am, the complainant returned home from work and realised her room was ransacked.
Sgt Avorgah said the complainant found out that blender valued GH¢400, gas cylinder valued GH¢150, microwave valued GH¢500, rice cooker valued GH¢280 and a set of bowls valued GH¢120 had been stolen.
The prosecution said the complainant had information that Bortey, the convict, had been arrested in connection with a similar offence.
Sgt Avorgah said the complainant reported the case to the police and Borteywas arrested.
In Mr Tawiah’s case, he detected that his goldsmith shop had been broken into and his jewellery manufacturing machine stolen.
The prosecution said Mr Tawiah had information that Bortey was offering the machine for sale at a scrap yard.
Sgt Avorgah said Mr Bortier together with his three sons rushed to the scrap yard and found Bortey with the machine.
The prosecution said when he (convict) saw Mr Bortier and the children, he attempted to run away, but he was chased, arrested and handed over to the police.
