Sole candidature no  guarantee for ExCo post  …FA Gen. Sec. explains contest for WPL slot

The Chief Executive Officer of Berry Ladies FC, Madam Gifty Oware-Mensah, is expected to go unopposed for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) slot on the FA’s Executive Committee (ExCo) at the upcoming elective congress of the Ghana Football Association.

Checks at the GFA Secretariat on Friday indicated that she was the only candidate that filed her nomination for the position at the close of nominations.

That makes her the sole candidate for the slot but information gathered at the corridors of the FA also suggested that the sole nomination was not a guarantee to land the post.

Speaking to the Times Sports, the General Secretary of the FA, Mr Prosper Harrison Addo, confirmed her status as an unopposed candidate but that, he said, does not make the position hers for now.

He explained that despite going unopposed, the candidate would be required to come out successfully from her vetting before laying claim to the seat.

Mr Addo said: “As of now, she has filed her nominations and becomes the only candidate for that slot, however, she must go through the processes laid down by the elections committee.”

The Elections Committee, he explained, would review, examine her documents and conduct extra checks on what has been submitted and goes through vetting.

“During this period, the committee would consider petitions against her from members of the public. If she satisfies the committee, approval would be given for her to be on the ballot paper. After that, she can consider the position as hers,” Mr. Addo stated.

Madam Oware-Mensah on Thursday filed her nomination to contest for the WPL representative on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council.

The Black Maidens Management Committee member, after filing her nomination, outlined six strategic areas she would focus on.

They include marketing and sponsorship for the various women’s league competitions, advocate for the creation of more football academies and grassroots competitions across the country to develop female talent from a young age, championing female leadership within football, and inspiring more women to get involved at all levels, from playing to coaching to administration.

She also seeks more avenues for funding to increase support and resources for the various women’s leagues, clubs, and development programmes and further raise the profile of the various national women’s teams.
