Over 6.6m people receive COVID-19 vaccination jab

More than one million people have been vaccinated within the last two weeks following the declaration of December as the Vaccination month in the country, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has revealed.

This brings the total number of Ghanaians vaccinated thus far to 6,609,366.

Out of the number of vaccines administered, AstraZeneca constitute the majority with 4,736,924 doses followed by Moderna with 447,295 doses, Pfizer 180,802, COVID-19 Vaccine Janssen 173, 207 and Sputnik-V 17,982.

Addressing the media in Accra yesterday, Dr Kuma-Aboagye said despite the encouraging figures recorded, there was the need for Ghanaians to avail themselves to be vaccinated.

He noted that vaccination remained the surest way of bringing the pandemic under control and with the advent of the Omicron variant in the country, it was imperative that every Ghanaian seized the opportunity.

He said it was untrue that the vaccines had adverse effect on those who took the jab, stressing that it was safe and the only solution to the pandemic.

On measures put in place to ensure that the situation did not get worse after the yuletide, he said the GHS and its security partners were ready to deploy personnel to see to the strict adherence of all COVID-19 protocols at all major outdoor and indoor events during the festivities.

This, according to him, formed part of broader measures put in place to stem the tide of a possible spike in the number of cases in the country.

He noted that all persons who intended to access indoor events to get vaccinated before entry, while event organisers and managers of facilities should encourage persons accessing such locations to be vaccinated.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye said the areas where personnel would be deployed to, include the beaches, stadia, churches and other gatherings.

As part of the measures, he said the GHS would ensure that capacity for indoor events did not go beyond twenty-five percent of their total capacity.

He, therefore, appealed to the public to support the fight against the pandemic for the country to get back to normalcy.
