Assembly members have been advised to build capacities to enable them perform their duties effectively and efficiently.
Building their capacity occasionally will also help them to educate and sensitise their respective residents to understand their duties to avoid pressures from residents.
Samuel Okoe Amanquah, the Municipal Chief Executive for Kpone-Katamanso underscored the need to build the capacity of assembly members to enable them to effectively and efficiently perform their duties so as to accelerate development of communities.
Speaking at a town hall meeting held at Sebrepor near Tema in the Greater Accra Region, to give the people an insight into what the assembly was doing to make issues better for communities such as projects started and the progress of work so far and those completed, he noted that it was important that the assembly members were assisted and supported to have a better understanding of the local governance structure and system, to bring progress, growth and development to their electoral areas.
“It is for the reason that the assembly has commenced a capacity-building training programme for members of the assembly to understand the dynamics of the local governance structure in order to accelerate socioeconomic development and also explain to the residents reasons for delayed projects.
“I will appeal to stakeholders in the municipality including traditional authorities, Member of Parliament, clergy, assembly members, the youth and organised groups not to shirk your responsibility to the assembly but contribute meaningfully towards progress, growth and development,” Mr Amanquah.
He assured of more development projects to be implemented this year to transform the lives of the people and called for all to unite behind the assembly by agreeing to pay their taxes, levies and rates and to keep their surroundings clean to stay in good health to develop their communities.
Ms Sakina Nyankamawu, the Municipal Planning Officer, said the growing population of the area required generating more revenue through its Internal Generated Funds to meet the basic needs of the people they had been yearning for, now as a population of 417,334, making it the most populated municipality in the Greater Accra Region. -GNA
