Mahama accepts challenge thrown by EC for police investigation

Former President, John Mahama, has accepted the challenge thrown by the Electoral Commission (EC) to the police to investigate a claim he made to the effect there was one million vote fraud in the 2020 elections to favour President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“That is what I want, EC wants an investigation, let us have it but I do not know if the police are the best to do that. I do not know what the police are going to investigate; we want an independent inquiry or we go to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

ECOWAS has an electoral body, let them come and investigate Ghana’s 2020 elections. I will welcome it, testify under oath, swear an oath, testify, and not run away from the witness box,” former President Mahama averred.

He had accused the commission of thumb printing one million ballot papers in favour of President Akufo-Addo in the 2020 presidential election and alleged when he addressed divisional chief of Prestea Himan, Nana Nteboah Prah, as part of his ‘Thank You tour’ in the Western Region.

The former president alleged that more than one million extra ballot papers were printed, which EC claimed happened by mistake. However, on the day of elections, some of more than one million extra ballot papers had already been secretly thumb printed in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which dented the credibility of the polls and caused embarrassment.

But responding to him, the commission said its silence on the issue had dire consequences on public confidence in the commission and wanted the police to investigate since the commission owed it a duty to provide the citizenry with facts and truths about elections and allegations raised.

The commission called on him to provide evidence to support his claim because the transparency of processes made it impossible for electoral fraud to happen, and serial numbers on ballot papers for each region and constituency were made known to agents before elections.

In reply to EC, Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), welcomed the call on the police to investigate facts put out by the former President and the party stood prepared to assist in any credible investigation into issues raised. -3news.com
