WusutaDzigbe residents march againstFulani cattle destroying farms

Residents of WusutaDzigbe in the North Dayi District of the Volta Region yesterday held a protest march through the principal streets of the town in solidarity with the farmers whose farms are constantly destroyed by cattle belonging to Fulani herdsmen.

The protest march organised by the youth of the town was to draw the attention of the Government and the North Dayi District Assembly to the continuous destruction of their crops by these animals.

The protesters, carrying placards, some of which read “President, we need help: Cattle herdsmen are threatening our lives;and 100 acres of cassava farms destroyed,  led journalists to some of the destroyed farms to observe the extent of damage caused to crops such as maize, yams and vegetables.

Mr Festus SemanuTsitsi, the 2020 North Dayi District Best Farmer, had his 120-acre yam farm destroyed by the cattles.

He said the Fulani  herdsmen always carry weapons such as guns and cutlasses which they use to terrorise the farmhands that work for Mr Festus SemanuTsitsi.

According to MrTsitsi, his farm hands have abandoned the farms but he is to pay them GHc65,000.00.

The Warlord of Wusuta Traditional Area, AsafoatsegaKuklui, explained that they invited the North Dayi District Chief Executive when the destruction started to discuss how to stop it but the situation continued to aggravate.

He noted that due to the situation, many of the youth in the area thought farming was time wasting and as a result some had started indulging in criminal activities to make ends meet.

“Worst of it all is that the herders persistently attack them to leave the farms for their cattle  and our women, because of the attack on their lives, have refused to go to their farms and life is becoming difficult for them,” he said.

AsafoatsegaKuklui noted that even though they are law-abiding citizens,if nothing was done by the law enforcement agencies, they might have no other option than to allow their Asafo warriors to take over the security of their farms.
