Woman commits suicide over infidelity accusation

A 19-year-old woman, who was accused of infidelity, committed suicide at Assin Dompim, in the Fosu Municipality of the Central Region.

Ms Philipa Obeng, trader and mother of one, decided to end her life following heightened humiliation by residents, who alleged she cheated on the husband, who had traveled to seek cure to health condition.

She was openly castigated and branded a prostitute by some residents of Assin Dompim, for purportedly confessing to her husband, Pascal, that she has been unfaithful to him.

A police source and some community leaders told the Ghana News Agency that Pascal was said to be seeking treatment from acute illness in a nearby community.

The situation, many town folks claimed provided the opportunity for Obeng to allegedly become promiscuous.

According to the source, when Pascal recovered from the illness and returned home, Obeng could no longer bear the mockery and trolls by residents.

Obeng allegedly drunk orange juice laced with weedicide after a disagreement between her and the husband.

The source said Obeng was rushed to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, but died, and Pascal has been arrested to assist the police in investigation.

Mr Isaac Ofori, a Unit Committee Member, said residents expressed shock at Obeng’s alleged suicide.

Ms Elizabeth Ewudzie, a friend of Obeng, denied the claim that Obeng confessed to her husband that she had been unfaithful to him.

As tears rolled down the face of Ewudzie, she said she could not understand why Obeng should kill herself over rumours of infidelity.

Clara Awuah Malik, another friend lamented the death of Obeng saying “we all heard rumours of her infidelity, but I know they are baseless. Little did we expect her to allow her emotions to get to that extent.” — GNA
