UK-based Ghanaian doctors, dentists give PPE worth GH₵52,500 to 3 entities

Ghanaian Doctors and Dentists Association-UK (GDDA-UK) on Wednesday donated personal protective equipment (PPE) worth GH¢52,500 to two health institutions and a constituency in the country.

The beneficiaries comprise Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) Hospital, Ledzokuku Constituency, both in the Greater Accra Region, and Yendi Municipal Hospital in the Northern Region.

The PPE were made up of KN95 nose masks, disposable nose masks, examination gloves, surgical gowns, infrared thermometers, disposable head- covers, gum boots, disposable shoe covers, Veronica buckets, hand sanitisers, hand paper towels and liquid soaps, among others.

Prof. Sam Debrah and Dr Fobi Adusa-Amankwa, both GDDA-UK members said during the presentation in Accra that, the donation was to support the beneficiaries to protect themselves against coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“It is our desire to help the constituency as well as frontline health workers in Ghana, particularly those of the health facilities in the two municipalities, to combat the deadly disease,” they said.

On behalf of the president of GDDA-UK, Dr William Kedjanyi, who was unable to be in Ghana because of the lockdown in UK and travel restrictions, the two members were optimistic the items would complement the government’s national strategy in dealing with the COVID-19 in the country.

The items were received by the Acting Medical Director of LEKMA Hospital, Dr Akua Gyimah-Asante, whilst Dr Okoe Boye, MP for Ledzokuku Constituency and Deputy Minister of Health, received that of his constituency and on behalf of the Yendi Hospital.

Dr Boye commended the association, and encouraged the public to take a cue, and support health facilities to reduce the cost of healthcare delivery.

Dr Gyimah-Asante on her part expressed appreciation for the kind gesture, adding that: “We are highly impressed with this donation which will augment and improve our delivery to our clients and boost our morale because we know that, we are protected and therefore, we can give off our best.”

She used the opportunity to call on other coporate bodies to partner LEKMA Hospital as stakeholders in healthcare, and support them to beat COVID-19.
