Tullow Ghana Limited is investing in 37 million dollars on infrastructure to stop the flaring of gas by the year 2025 to preserve the environment.
The Deputy Managing Director of Tullow Ghana, Cynthia Lumor, who disclosed in Accra on Monday when her outfit signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Forestry Commission (FC) Ghana, said the move formed part of measures of the company to achieve net zero carbon emission by 2030.
The MoU was meant to identify and develop carbon offset projects that will support both the realisation of Tullow’s 2030 Net Zero plans and the government of Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement to combat climate change.
As part of the MoU, the two organisations will collaborate to develop projects which will enhance the conservation of existing forests and increase forest stocks in line with Ghana’s REDD+ strategy.
Ms Lumor said Tullow Ghana was putting up infrastructure which would enable the company to process the gas on its Jubilee and TEN Fields.
“With this programme, what we are aiming to do is to cut our carbon emission by a minimum of 600 000 tonnes per annum and our aspiration is to increase it to 1.2 million per annum,” she said.
Ms Lumor said the collaboration with FC Ghana would not only help build a low carbon future where Tullow Ghana would support initiatives on afforestation and the planting of more trees in some selected communities around the country to preserve the environment and promote better livelihoods for the citizens of the country.
“The partnership with FC Ghana to co-develop carbon offsets projects is beneficial to both parties and is evidence of demonstrable resolve between private sector and government, united to address climate change while supporting sustainable delivery of energy for development. Benefits to local communities will be at the forefront of projects to be developed to ensure that we continue to create alternative livelihoods aligned with our shared prosperity agenda,” MsLumor said.
The Deputy Managing Director indicated that her outfit was working with FC Ghana to identify the communities for the afforestation project and the number of trees that would be planted.
The Chief Executive Officer of FC Ghana, Mr John M.Allotey, commended Tullow Ghana for its efforts to combat climate change.
He said the move by Tullow Ghana was in line with the vision of government to initiate projects to plant more trees to combat climate change.
“Ghana has demonstrated significant leadership on REDD+ to tackle deforestation and forest degradation. As a signatory to the Glasgow Leaders Declaration on Forests and Land-use, the Country is even more determined to harness the power of collective action, in partnership with private sector to make good our promise for the survival of forests ecosystems, people and their livelihoods. The signing of the MoU is therefore timely, and the Commission looks forwards to the implementation of measurable actions for verifiable emissions reductions,” Mr Allotey said.
