Portia Gabor of TV3 in Accra has been adjudged Journalist of the Year 2021 at this year’s Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards.
She was also named the Best in Television news reporting and Best in Health reporting.
The event, which was held on Saturday on the theme “Walking the path towards Ghana’s economic recovery: The role of the media”, also saw Emmanuel Koranteng of Joy News and Francisca Enchill of Joy Prime/freelancer winning Most Promising Journalist and Female Journalist of the year respectively.
In a speech, Mrs Gabor expressed gratitude to her colleagues for providing the needed support that had resulted in the production of impactful stories.
Despite recent developments which indicated that press freedom was under threat, she said, she was committed as a journalist to boldly and professionally put duty-bearers on their toes.
She pledged to use her position and platform to amplify the voices of the vulnerable and needy in society to enable them to contribute effectively to nation building.
Other winners at the awards night are Benedicta Gyimah Folley and Geoffrey Buta, both of the Ghanaian Times, who were crowned Best in Gender Reporting and Best Photojournalist respectively.
Kester Aburam Korankye of the Daily Graphic was named the Best in Features for Print and Best in Road Safety while two of his colleagues, Maclean Kwofi and Emmanuel Bonney won Best in News Reporting for Print and Best in News Reporting for Online respectively.
Ridwan K. Osman of EIB Network won Best in News Reporting on Radio while Peggy Ama Donkor took home Best in Features for TV.
Albert Oppong Ansah of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) won Best in Features for Online, Seth J. Bokpe of the Fourth Estate was adjudged Best in Democracy Reporting.
Juliet Bawuah and Joseph Armstrong Gold-Alorgney, both of TV3, were crowned Best in Sports Reporting and Best in Education Reporting respectively.
Daryl Kwawu of Joy News won Best in Business and Economic Reporting while Godwin Asediba, formerly of GHOne Television was named Best in Environment and Science Reporting.
Best in Agriculture Reporting went to Richard Kwadwo Nyarko while Samuel Amoh of Adom TV took home Best in Disability Reporting.
Beatrice Senaju of GBC won Best in Tourism Reporting while Solomon Joojo Cobbina of Joy News was named Best in TV Documentary.
Best TV/Radio Programme in Akan was won by Di Asa on Atinka TV while Best Programme in Ga went to Obonu FM.
The Newsfile programme, which is aired on both JoyNews and Joy FM was adjudged best TV programme.
James Nortey, a GJA staff at the Ghana International Press Centre took home the GJA President Special Award.
