Okada accident victim tells his story ….calls for enforcement of ban

Daniel Karmara, an okada accident victim, has called on the government to enforce the law banning the use of motorcycles popularly known as ‘okada’ for commercial passenger transport business in the country.

According to him, the ‘okada’ business was becoming a nuisance to society because most of them failed observe road traffic regulations leading to accidents.

“They also risk the lives of passengers. I am a victim of the negative impact of their activities. I was knocked down by one of them and had spent time and money in the hospital,” he said.

Mr Karmara, narrating his story to the Ghanaian Times  in Accra on Tuesday said, he was knockdown by an ‘okada’ rider at Kasoa in the Central Region on September 21, 2016.

The rider, Waham Abdul Iddrissu, was consequently arrested and put before the Ofaakor District Magistrate Court, adding that the case was later transferred to an Accra High Court where he was convicted and fined.

According to Mr Karmara, since the accident, he had not been himself as he had to endure the pain, the psychological trauma and the deformity in his right leg.

He said, the company that insured the motor cycle compensated him with GH₵5,000.00, which was not enough to cater for his medical expenses.

“I have gone to the Court of Appeal to revisit the issues because I’m not satisfied with the compensation package,” he said.
