Muslim Councils of Ghana send condolences to Morocco

The Federation of Muslim Councils of Ghana (FMC) has sent its condo­lences to victims of the earthquake which rocked Morocco on Friday night.

Measuring a magnitude of 6.8, the earthquake which struck in the High Atlas mountain range near Marrakesh has claimed some 2,012 lives leaving more than 2,000 injured and many hundreds missing.

In a statement to commiserate with the Moroccan people, the FMC said it is “sad­dened by the loss of lives, damage to prop­erty as well as injuries sustained by residents of Marrakesh and its environs”.

“The FMC hereby expresses its heartfelt condolences to His Majesty Mohammed VI, King of Morocco (may Allah assist him) and the families of the deceased for their loss,” the statement signed by Hajj Muham­mad Kpakpo Addo, General Secretary, said.

Wishing the injured a quick recovery, the statement prayed the “Almighty Allah to give the bereaved families the strength and sabr to bear this calamity.”

The statement said as proclaimed by the Holy Quran, “We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.”

The epicentre of the quake was in a remote mountainous region south-west of Marrakesh, where there are reports of entire villages flattened.

The quake is the strongest to hit the North African country in more than a century, and its epicentre was not far from the popular tourist and economic hub of Marrakesh.

Morocco’s state-owned MAP news agency reported that “three days of national mourning have been decided, with flags to fly at half-mast on all public buildings,” af­ter King Mohammed VI chaired a meeting to discuss the disaster on Saturday.

Civil protection units have been deployed to increase stocks in blood banks and en­sure the supply of vital resources including water, food, tents and blankets to affected areas, the publication added.
