Madina MP case adjourned to Nov 29

The Kaneshie District Court yesterday adjourned to November 29, the case involving Francis  Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament (MP) of Madina, in the Greater Accra Region, following the absence of accused from court yesterday.

This is the second time he has failed to appear before the court, presided over by KofiOheneba-Kuffour, with the excuse of performing Parliamentary duties outside the country.

A letter that was served the registrar of the court, and read by a clerk, indicated that MrSosu was still on official duties abroad.

The letter indicated that the MP was representing parliament at a conference in the United States of America (USA).

MrSosu is facing criminal charges for resisting police arrest after he allegedly breached the law during a demonstration last month by his constituents, aimed at calling the attention of government to the deplorable nature of roads in the constituency.

He was said to have led protestors to unlawfully block roads and burn tyres, leading to the destruction of properties in the area.

MrSosuallegedly failed to respond to invitations by the security personnel to assist in investigations.

The police said that the demonstration resulted in some constituents engaging in alleged destruction of assets.

The police’s first attempt to arrest the MP a day after the demonstration, failed after he was allegedly whisked away in a vehicle by unknown persons at after church service.

According to MrSosu, though protestors blocked roads, there was no need for any arrest because he had followed due process in organising the protest.

After the demonstration brouhaha, MrSosu filed a formal complaint in Parliament accusing two police personnel, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Isaac Kojo Asante, who is the Greater Accra Regional Operations Commander, and ACP Eric Winful, the Adentan Divisional Commander, of contempt of Parliament.

The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin, referred the complaint against the two police officers to the Privileges Committee of Parliament.
