Koopman on his future: I don’t fear the sack

The Head Coach of Accra Hearts of Oak, Martin Koopman, says he is not afraid of losing his job.

This was in reaction to questions posed by Journalists on his future after his latest draw in the Ghana Premier League.

Koopman drew goalless with Legon Cities to amass his 12th point from 10 games in the ongoing betPawa Premier League.

The Dutch coach, who took over the helm of affairs in August on a three-year deal, has struggled to replicate the preseason form that saw his side blow away opponents ahead of the start of the season.

He has drawn six, won two and lost two as the Phobians sat at 11th position on the league log.

In a chat with the media, Coach Koopman indicated he was the best coach to work with the current Hearts of Oak team.

“I believe in my qualities and capabilities, I believe I am the coach who can work with this team.”

That notwithstanding, he stated that “I am not afraid to be sacked, never! If I am afraid to get the sack, then I do not need to be in this profession.”

Touting his over 40 years credentials as a professional footballer and coach, the former Go Ahead Eagles, FC Twente, and Cambuur Leeuwarden defender said if the authorities decide to sack him, he will respect it although he has a three-year contract with the club.

Hearts failed to snatch the three points to climax their 122nd anniversary as they were held goalless in an Accra derby with Legon Cities.

The Phobians, despite having a lion’s share of play, failed to turn the numerous chances that came their way into goals.

Goalkeeper Richmond Ayi in post for Hearts of Oak was on virtual holiday throughout the entire first half as the ball rarely got to him.

On the 45th minute, Enoch Asubonteng brought the best out of goalkeeper Kwame Aziz as the latter stretched to parry over the bar a goal-bound shot from outside the box.

Back from the break, Hamzah Issah, who was held in check by Frank Akoto all afternoon, had his moment in the 54th minute, but his shot missed the post by inches.

Ten minutes later, Albert Enode hit a powerful strike from behind the box but missed the upright.

Substitute Mohammed Alidu nearly broke the Phobians in the 74th minute when he weaved his way through the defence of Hearts and hit a low ball past Ayi only for Michael Ampadu to clear the ball off the goal line.

The Phobians will next play as guest of Accra Lions on Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium in a match day 11 clash.
