The Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Armed Forces on Saturday, intercepted a canoe suspected to be transporting an unquantified amount of substance suspected to be marijuana at Agorkpo area in the Ada East District of the Greater Accra Region.

A statement signed by the Deputy Director of Public Relations of the Ghana Navy, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Amarteye, said the Ada-Foah detachment of the Riverine Command of the navy gathered intelligence on the illicit activity during a night foot patrols on Friday, December 15, prompting the operation on the following day, Saturday December 16

The statement said upon the intelligence gathered, the detachment laid ambush at two locations from 3 a.m awaiting the movement of the canoes.

At about 4 a.m, the first ambush team sighted three canoes involved in the illegality proceeding at top speed past their location towards an unknown destination.

Contrary to their anticipation, the suspects diverted their route

off the direction of the main ambush team necessitating a chase from the first team of three men who intercepted the third canoe at Agakpo area near Ada-Foah, the statement indicated.

According to the statement, the three suspects on the third canoe sensing danger of their apprehension, dived into the river and escaped leaving the canoe and its contents after a scuffle with the naval personnel.

It said the two other canoes escaped towards the estuary and could not be arrested by the main ambush team after a follow-up chase.

“The detachment confiscated 45 sacks of suspected marijuana yet to be weighed and valued.

The confiscated items have been conveyed to the Eastern Naval Base here in Tema, pending further investigations,” the statement concluded.
