21 perish in gruesome road crash …4 children, others injured at Breku, near Konongo

Twenty-one passengers were killed when two vehicles involved in a head-on collision at Breku, near Konongo, in the Asante Akim South District of Ashanti Region, Friday night.
Fourteen victims, including drivers of both vehicles, were said to have died on the spot, and the remaining seven passed on at the Juaso and Konongo Government hospitals.
Some passengers, including four children, suffered injuries during the crash, and were undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The bodies have been deposited at the Steward Mortuary at Yawkwei and Konongo Government Hospital.
The incident involved a sprinter bus, with registration number AS 4484-23,which was travelling from Accra to Kumasi, and a Ford bus, with registration GR-6279-24, which was travelling from Kumasi to Accra.
Mr Alexander Frimpong, District Chief Executive, when contacted by the Ghanaian Times, said he had not received any official information from the police about the road crash, but has heard of the incident.
The police declined to make any comment about the accident because they had been directed by the higher command not to speak to the issue.
Eyewitness account had it that one of the drivers, who was speeding, made a wrongful overtaking leading to the collision.

According to the eyewitness, the spot was an accident prone area, and appealed to drivers to avoid speeding on the stretch.
Some of the dead, the Ford bus driver, and a young woman whose daughter was among the injured, were said to be inhabitants of Juaso.
It was quite a scene at the Steward Mortuary, where a large crowd gathered to identify relatives amid weeping and wailing.
