2 arrested for stealing ECG conductors

Two suspects have been arrested for allegedly stealing electricity conductors valued at GH¢103,000, belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), at Benso in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region.

Baba Kasim, 32, and Alu Cudjoe, 62, have been placed in police custody at Benso while investigation continued.

The suspects according to police source, were grabbed following reports of stealing of conductors and vandalisation of ECG installations in the municipality.

Public Relations Officer, ECG, Western Region, Benjamin Quarcoo, corroborated the arrest to the Ghanaian Times, on Monday.

He said Benso and its environs, have been experiencing long hours of power cuts due to tampering with or stealing of ECG conductors or electric cables.

Mr Quarcoo said the development was affecting ECG’s ability to supply power to customers since the cost involved in replacing stolen cables, conductors and other equipment was becoming unbearable.

He said “money that can be used for expansion works, or replacement of obsolete cables and equipment, is used to replace stolen cables.”

Mr Quarcoo cited that vandalisation of ECG installations at Cyanide, suburb of Tarkwa, plunged the municipality in darkness, since Thursday evening. He however, said on Saturday, the ECG restored power to all the affected areas.

Mr Quarcoo appealed to the general public to help ECG arrest people who steal or vandalise electric cables and equipment.
