Junior High School (JHS) students in Wa in the Upper West Region, have called on the Municipal Assembly to tackle the poor sanitation, to prevent the outbreak of malaria, cholera and diarrhoea.
Miss Jennifer Mahama of Tender Care Preparatory School, at Wa said “We are appealing to stakeholders in the municipality to help provide dustbins at vantage points, to ensure that refuse receptacles are readily available for residents in order to avoid littering about”.
She made the call on Saturday at a sanitation programme, organised by Info Radio, a local radio station, in Wa, in collaboration with Theia International, a German-based non-governmental organisation (NGO).
Students of Tindanba, Agdam and Ancilla JHS took part in the event that sought to promote good sanitation practices among students in the municipality through debates.
Miss Mahama called for enhanced education on clean environment, saying people must know the harmful effects of filth so that they can keep their surroundings clean.
“It is important for people who live closer to gutters and streets to clean around the place and not expect government to employ people to do that for them because that is their home,” she indicated
Miss Mahama asked the assembly to enforce environmental laws, and called on the assembly to collaborate with stakeholders to find lasting solution to sanitation problems.
The Managing Director of Info radio, Mr Gabriel Mwini, said the programme was to offer school children to opportunity to contribute to the campaign to clean the environment.
He said there was the need for the assembly to prioritise issues on sanitation and hygiene and work with stakeholders such as traditional authorities and residents to achieve the objective.
Mr Mwini advised residents to desist from unfriendly environmental activities that posed threat to human existence.
