UWR Police warn errant road users

The Ghana Police Service in the Upper West Region has cautioned road users against misconducting themselves on the road.

The Police who gave the caution in a news release signed by the Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Gideon Boateng added that they would not hesitate to arrest deviant road users in order to restore sanity on the road.

“Drivers who park on the shoulders of the road or drive beyond the speed limit in town as well as motorists who ride or drive without side mirrors on their vehicles and motorcycles will be apprehended so that those who will be found culpable will be prosecuted at a court of competent jurisdiction to serve as a deterrent to others,” the statement indicated.

The news release was engineered by the recent spate of road crashes in the Wa Municipality which had led to the loss of lives as well as severe injuries sustained by others who survived the accidents.

“The rampant incidents of road crashes in the municipality which are not even reported officially to the police for investigation to prevent or minimise occurrences has come to the notice of the command irrespective of the fact that they were not reported and we will do everything possible to ensure there are no more accidents in Wa,” the release said.

It added that accidents on the roads could be avoided if road users strictly adhered to road signs and regulations and drivers did not misconduct themselves.

A source close to the police told the Ghanaian Times that more than three accidents were recorded at Wa two weeks ago leading to the loss of three lives including a two-year-old boy who died alongside his father after their motorcycle was crashed by an articulated truck.

In a bid to stop the trend and put road users in check, the police have increased surveillance on the roads by deploying adequate personnel to areas defined as accident-prone joints in the Wa township.
