UCC honours Dr Prempeh, 6 others for contribution to humanity

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has bestowed on seven individuals drawn from different fields of endeavours Honorary Doctorate Degrees (honaris causa) for their contributions and commitment towards the cause of humanity during a special congregation held by the University at the weekend.

This brings 51, the total number of honorary doctorate degrees that the University had conferred on distinguished personalities since 1972.

Among the personalities honoured during the event are Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, Paramount Chief of Assin Owirenkyi Traditional Area, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Energy, Prof. Harold Stewart Amonoo-Kuofi, Chairman of the Governing Council, Cape Coast Technical University, and Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong, former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

The others are Dr Deborah Rose, a researcher, Dr Yaw Adu-Agyei Gyamfi, Chief Executive of Dampong Healthcare Group Limited and Prof. Daniel Asua Wubah, President of Millersville University of Pennsylvania.

They were honoured in various disciplines with Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, receiving Doctor of Laws, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Doctor of Educational Leadership, while Prof. Harold Stewart Amonoo-Kuofi and Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong were honoured with Doctor of Science and Doctor of Business Administration respectively.

Dr Debora Rose received Doctor of Education, Dr Yaw Adu-Agyei Gyamfi, Doctor of Entrepreneurship and Prof. Daniel Asua Wubah, Doctor of Strategic Leadership.

The Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boapong in an address, indicated that the awardees were selected based on their distinguished service towards the cause of humanity and the country.

He explained that the university was still committed to its mandate of training the country’s teaching workforce.

“Although with the passage of time, and in response to global trends, we have expanded our programmes to accommodate other disciplines. We are still committed to our traditional core mandate, teaching, research and providing academic leadership within the educational landscape,” he said.

He reiterated the commitment of the current administration of transforming the university into a global entrepreneurial hub of academic excellence.

“This vision is to empower UCC graduates to have entrepreneurial competencies in line with the government policy initiatives on national entrepreneurship and innovative programmes intended to reduce graduate unemployment and promote job creation.”

Prof. Boampong further stated that under his leadership, a number of abandoned projects had been completed while the others were at various stages of completion.

The completion of the projects, he explained, was to enhance conducive academic work within the university.

He said the construction of the Institute for Law and Governance Complex being financed by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation on the campus of the university had stalled for some time now.

He therefore, appealed to the GNPC to ensure the early completion of the project to facilitate the institution’s efforts in training more human capital for national development.

Prof. Daniel Asua Wubah, on behalf of the other honourees, expressed their appreciation to the university for the honour bestowed on them.

“This moment represents not only our individual professional achievements but also a testament to the collective efforts and unwavering support of countless individuals who have contributed to our journeys,” he stated.
